The whole story of the Spice Girls started in 1993 with an ad in the London magazine, The Stage: "Are you 18-23 with the ability to sing/dance. Are you street wise, outgoing, ambitious and dedicated? All female act for a record deal", 400 girls responded to the ad. In March 4 1994 the auditions began at Trinity Studios, London for a new all girls pop group called "Touch" This group was supposed to be a female correspondence to Take That. After a few auditions the final five were selected. These five were Victoria Adams, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown and Michelle Stevenson. In June 1994, the five girls returned to Trinity Studios to start their training. During this time they all lived together in a house in Berkshire, England. But there was a problem. One of the girls, Michelle just didn't fit in to the group. Although she probably was the best singer of them all, she just hadn't got the right attitude. She decided to leave the group in August 1994. After that, Emma Bunton took her place. The rigorous training went on. The music industry was all new territory for all of them except for one.

Victoria had been in a band called "Persuasion" This band included three girls and two guys and played popular pop music. Since any of the girls hadn't sung very much before they all had to start from the bottom and learn the basics. The group was still called Touch at this time but the name was changed after hearing a song dedicated to them, "Sugar 'n' Spice" The girls left the studio in April 1995. They signed up with 19 Management and Virgin records.

Now they set out together with their new manager, Simon Fuller to conquer the world! Their first single, "Wannabe" was released in July 1996. It was an instant hit that made the girls famous all over the world. The single topped the charts in more than 30 countries. The day-view album, "Spice" came later that year. It sold in more than 18 million copies! At the Brit Awards in February 1997, the group won two awards. In April 1997 the girls sang "LIVE" for the very first time as they did a performance in the american show, Saturday Night Live. In October 1997 it was time for the girls' first ever live concert. It took place in Istanbul, Turkey and proved that the girls really could do live performances.

November 5, 1997 the group won the prize as best group at the MTV Europe Awards. At the same day they sacked their manager, Simon Fuller. In May 31, 1998, the Fab Five suddenly became the Fab Four as Geri Halliwell decided to leave the Spice Girls. This is her press statement: "This message is for the fans. Sadly, I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us. I'm sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best. I have no immediate plans. I wish to apologize to all the fans and to thank them and everyone who's been there. Lots of love Geri."

In November 2000, the Spice Girls released their third album Forever, the first without Geri Halliwell. The girls scored their ninth No.1 single Holler/Let Love Lead The Way making them the first girl band in the world to score this much of No.1 singles. In the meantime, there are still no concrete plans for the band as yet but according to Emma Bunton, they hope that they hope to perform together again really soon. Yet "girl power" is still alive with a combination of sexiness, confidence, strength and individuality. After Geri Halliwell departed the group, she embarked on a solo career and released her debut album, 'Schizophonic' in mid-1999.

Then there were four Spice Girls, who came out with a third album, 'Forever Spice', in 1999. Now all the Spice Girls are taking a break and are working on solo albums; Melanie C, 'Northern Star'; Emma Bunton, 'a Girl Like Me'; Mel B, 'Hot'; and Victoria, 'Victoria Beckham'.
